Lucas Helal

BBSc (Hons), MMSc, Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil)

Center for Open Science (COS) Ambassador

I am an early-career researcher trained in open science, meta-research and open science tools, as well as in clinical research focused in clinical epidemiology, biostatistics, randomized clinical trials, evidence synthesis designs, with particular interest in cardiovascular diseases.

My research agenda is divided into two main aims - (1) to advocate and promote for open and collaborative science, aiming to contribute for our research ecosystem reformulation, to reduce the avoidable waste in research and to improve research reproducibility overall; (2) and to contribute for progresses in clinical research and patients care, mainly in Cardiology. To do so, I have been trying to make efforts by working on: (a) the improvement of research transparency and openness, through a collaborative initiative called META-CG Initiative; (b) embarking on methods, regulatory aspects, and modernization of clinical trials and evidence-synthesis techniques conduction; (c) and testing and appraising pharmacological and non-pharmacological technologies for health care.

I currently am away of undergraduate teaching activities since 2021 October (former Assistant Professor at Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense - Unesc) and fixed through a post-doctoral fellowship position at the Diretoria de Pesquisa, Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, developing activities to improve research openness and quality institutionally; I am also a Brazilian COS Ambassador, committed with the duties of the COS and the Ambassador Program - at this point, you can expect from my side any kind for instruction, dissemination, advocacy as well as research projects related to open science in a more scalable manner; finally, I head the META-CG Initiative, although it is very important to highlight that our working policy aims an horizontal relationship as long as possible, and I am an affiliated researcher of the Centre for Journalology, Ottawa, Canada.
